# Running a mosque screen offline

What a Salah Point screen does with no internet, how long it lasts, what waits for a connection, and what can break it. Answered from how the app really works.

A Salah Point screen needs internet once. On its first opening it stores itself and your timetable up to the end of next year. After that it runs with no connection, also after a restart, as long as the device opens the link again. Your changes wait until it is back online.

**Tested:** Chrome on a computer on 3 November 2026, with the network cut, a reload and a browser restart. **Not tried:** a long offline run on TVs, boxes or a Raspberry Pi.

## What works without internet

| Thing | Offline? |
|---|---|
| Prayer times, adhan and iqama, to the end of next year | Yes |
| Countdown, Friday times, daylight saving | Yes |
| Template, colours, languages, logo, photos | Yes, stored |
| Quran verses, hadith, your own texts | Yes, stored |
| Your notices and pictures, with their dates | Yes |
| Dark screen, Ramadan mode | Yes |
| Adhan from your recording | Yes, once stored. The browser may need one click. |
| New times, settings, notices, app versions | No, these wait |

## How it catches up

It asks the server every 15 minutes, and hourly after an hour of failures. It downloads everything first and only then changes the screen, so a broken connection never leaves half a timetable. Under 60 days left, it fetches more when it can. Under 30, the "Offline" label says how many. Connect it before they run out, or it can't show any more.

## The clock is the weak point

Offline, the screen counts by the device's clock. If it cannot confirm the time after a start, because the clock may have stopped while the power was off, it shows "Time not confirmed, check the clock" in large letters and keeps the times on the screen.

- A normal PC keeps time with a small battery.
- A [Raspberry Pi](/resources/raspberry-pi) needs a clock module, or a battery on a Pi 5. Without one, after a power cut with no internet its times are wrong until it is online again, under that note.
- A [TV box](/resources/android-tv-box) needs a real-time clock, says [Tawkit's help](https://www.tawkit.net/en/help/choose-device-for-mosque/).

## What can break it

- **Incognito.** Chrome [keeps no site data](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95464) after the session.
- **Clearing browser data,** by hand or on exit.
- **Edge's kiosk mode,** which [runs as InPrivate](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-configure-kiosk-mode).
- **A new browser or profile.** Open the link there once with internet.
- **TV browsers** may not keep [service workers](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Service_Worker_API). See the [smart TV guide](/resources/smart-tv-browser).

If a mosque is deleted, a running screen isn't told, and keeps showing its stored times.

## Test it in five minutes

1. Open your link with internet and wait a minute.
2. Cut the network. A small "Offline" label appears after a while.
3. Restart and open the link again. Your times should return.
4. Change something small in your dashboard, reconnect, and watch it arrive.
